Beyond the chair: approaching dental care for survivors of trauma

ABSTRACT

This article explores the implementation of trauma-informed care in general dental practices for patients with histories of sexual abuse and adverse childhood experiences. These individuals may find dental settings extremely distressing and providing care can be challenging. It emphasises the importance of creating a safe, supportive environment and understanding the impact of trauma on patient behaviour. The article provides practical management techniques and strategies, including effective communication, building trust and empowering the patient to reduce anxiety and enable successful care. By integrating these practices, dental professionals can improve patient experiences and outcomes, cultivating a more compassionate and understanding dental environment.
