Zimbabwe antenatal HIV prevalence rate is 16.1%. HIV-positive pregnant adolescent girls and young women (AYW) are at high risk to experience perinatal mental health challenges, attributed to a combination of factors including HIV status, stigma and perinatal depression. Perinatal depression and stigma among AYW is understudied in Zimbabwe and may affect short- and long-term health of HIV positive mothers and their children, and can impact treatment adherence.
Enriching iPSC research diversity: Harnessing human biobank collections for improved ethnic representation

Biobanks of human biosamples and cell lines are indispensable for biomedical research on human health and disease and for drug development projects. Many human cell line biobanks worldwide hold collections of lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs), representing thousands of affected and control donors from diverse ethnic/ancestry groups. In recent years, induced human pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and differentiated human cells derived from these iPSCs have become indispensable for applied biomedical research. Establishing iPSCs remains a laborious and costly step towards generating differentiated human cells. To address this research need, several non-profit and commercial biobanks have established iPSC collections for distribution to researchers, thereby serving as a resource for generating differentiated human cells. The most common starting materials for generation of iPSCs are a skin biopsy for harvesting fibroblasts, or a blood sample for collection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. However untapped resources include the large established collections of biobanked human LCLs which can be reprogrammed to iPSCs using a variety of published protocols including the use of non-integrating episomal vectors. Many biobanks curate LCLs from diverse ethnic/ancestry populations, an aspect largely absent in most established iPSC biobanks which tend to primarily reflect populations from developed countries. Here, we call upon researchers across the breadth of iPSC research to tap the unique resource of existing and diverse human LCL collections for establishing biobanked iPSC panels that better represent the varied human ethnic (and hence genomic) diversity, thereby benefiting precision medicine and drug development research on a global scale.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus: Epidemiology, Burden of Disease, and Clinical Update

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common viral pathogen that accounts about 33 million cases of acute lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) worldwide in children under the age of 5 years each year. High-risk populations, particularly preterm infants, those with underlying chronic lung disease, congenital heart disease, or compromised immune systems, are afflicted most significantly. RSV infection is characterized by significant amount of mucus and submucosal edema in the respiratory tract, leading to congestion and, oftentimes, significant respiratory distress. Antigen- and PCR-based testing are used to diagnose RSV infection.

Status of BMI and Blood Pressure in Male Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Now a days, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a global health problem. This study was done to evaluate the changes of body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure (BP) in COPD patients in comparison to healthy person. This analytical type of cross sectional study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh between the periods from July 2018 to June 2019. Total 160 male subjects, age ranged from 30-70 years was included in this study. Among them, in study group (Group II) eighty (80) male COPD subjects and eighty (80) age matched male healthy subjects were taken as control group (Group I). BMI was calculated as weight in kilogram divided by the height in meter square. Blood pressure was measured with an aneroid sphygmomanometer. Data were expressed as mean±SD and statistical significance of difference among the group was calculated by unpaired students' 't' test. The mean±SD of BMI of Group I and Group II were 24.52±1.35kg/m² and 21.22±1.30kg/m² respectively. The mean±SD of systolic blood pressure of Group I and Group II were 118.75±7.73 mm of Hg and 134.56±15.24 mm of Hg respectively. The mean±SD diastolic blood pressure of Group I and Group II were 77.63±6.70 mm of Hg and 84.69±8.05 mm of Hg respectively. The mean±SD of BMI was significantly lower in study group and the mean±SD of systolic and diastolic blood pressure was significantly higher in study group than control group. Low BMI and hypertension in subjects with COPD are associated with a high risk of exacerbations and mortality. So assessment of this parameter is important for prevention of complication related to COPD for leading a healthy life.
Demographic Characteristics, Clinical Profile, Outcome and Risk Factors of Covid-19 among Health Care Workers in a COVID Dedicated Hospital

The extremely contagious global outbreak of the novel Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) caused by Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS- CoV-2) is causing concern worldwide since its emergence. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are more susceptible for acquiring Covid-19 due to direct or indirect exposure to Covid-19 patients. Therefore, it is important to investigate demographic, clinical characteristics and outcome of affected persons and possible source of infection with exposure details. This study aimed at determining the demographic and clinical profile, outcome and possible risk factors for infection among the HCWs at Kurmitola General Hospital (KGH), Bangladesh. This retrospective observational study was done among the SARS-CoV-2 positive HCWs of Kurmitola General Hospital (KGH) from April 2020 to January 2021. Out of total 1323 HCWs, 180(13.9%) cases were detected Covid-19 positive. Among the infected HCWs, 76(42.2%) were male and 104(57.8%) were female. The mean age was 32.8±6.95 years. Eighty nine (89) were nurses (49.4%) and 67 were physicians (37.2%). Among them, 23(13.0%) had no definite symptoms. Mild symptoms had in 137(76.11%) and 40(22.22%) had moderate symptoms. Most common symptoms were fever 112(62.0%), weakness 108(60.0%), cough 102(57.0%) and myalgia 54(30.0%). Pre-existing comorbidities had 43(24.0%). Bronchial asthma 27(15.0%), HTN 24(13.0%) and DM 21(12.0%) were the most prevalent comorbidities. All completely were recovered ultimately. Fatigue 52(28.89%), shortness of breath 15(8.3%), cough 13(7.2%) were the most common long-term complications. Among them, 53(29.0%) pointed toward lack of maintaining a hygienicatmosphere, as their possible cause of being infected, whereas 37(21.0%) could not identify the cause. Maximum HCWs, 170 cases (94.44%) used PPE during their duty. Adequate training get 26(14.44%) on PPE use and Infection prevention and control (IPC). This study concludes almost 1.4 in 10 HCWs at KGH were infected with SARS-CoV-2 while working in hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic. Affected HCWs have relatively female predominance with younger age, milder symptoms, and less underlying diseases in this study. Fatigue and shortness of breath are most common long-term complications, which hampers their working ability. Most of them did not get any training on PPE use and IPC.

Acute leukaemias (AL) are life-threatening blood cancers that can be potentially cured with treatment involving myelosuppressive, multiagent, intensive chemotherapy (IC). However, such treatment is associated with a risk of serious infection, in particular invasive fungal infection (IFI) associated with prolonged neutropenia. Current practice guidelines recommend primary antifungal (AF) prophylaxis to be administered to high-risk patients to reduce IFI incidence. AFs are also used empirically to manage prolonged neutropenic fever. Current strategies lead to substantial overuse of AFs. Galactomannan (GM) and β-D-glucan (BG) biomarkers are also used to diagnose IFI. Combining both biomarkers may enhance the predictability of IFI compared to administering each test alone. Currently, no large-scale randomised controlled trial (RCT) has directly compared a biomarker-based diagnostic screening strategy without AF prophylaxis to AF prophylaxis (without systematic biomarker testing).
Temporal trends in indoor bioaerosols: implications for dental healthcare environments

Antibiotic resistance, a significant public health hazard, is predicted to cause 10 million deaths worldwide by 2050. The study aimed to identify culturable bioaerosols in the indoor air of dental units in Lahore and assess their antibiotic resistance. Air samples were collected from 10 dental unit locations at different distances, with average concentrations of fungi and bacteria falling within intermediate ranges, per the Global Index of Microbial Contamination (GIMC/m3) index. The study found higher antibiotic-resistant strains in hospital dental units, particularly during winter. The most vigorous strain, -NAJIH18, exhibited 70% resistance to ceftazidime. The research highlights the importance of quantifying microbial pollutants for evaluating their source and complexity. It suggests proactive mitigation techniques, such as focused cleaning and air filtration, to improve indoor air quality can mitigate the spread of antibiotic-resistant strains. These insights offer hope in combating the growing public health threat of antibiotic resistance.

Revolutionizing indoor air quality monitoring through IoT innovations: a comprehensive systematic review and bibliometric analysis

Indoor air quality (IAQ) in the built environment is significantly influenced by particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, and air temperature. Recently, the Internet of Things (IoT) has been integrated to improve IAQ and safeguard human health, comfort, and productivity. This review seeks to highlight the potential of IoT integration for monitoring IAQ. Additionally, the paper details progress by researchers in developing IoT/mobile applications for IAQ monitoring, and their transformative impact in smart building, healthcare, predictive maintenance, and real-time data analysis systems. It also outlines the persistent challenges (e.g., data privacy, security, and user acceptability), hampering effective IoT implementation for IAQ monitoring. Lastly, the global developments and research landscape on IoT for IAQ monitoring were examined through bibliometric analysis (BA) of 106 publications indexed in Web of Science from 2015 to 2022. BA revealed the most significant contributing countries are India and Portugal, while the top productive institutions and researchers are Instituto Politecnico da Guarda (10.37% of TP) and Marques Goncalo (15.09% of TP), respectively. Keyword analysis revealed four major research themes: IoT, pollution, monitoring, and health. Overall, this paper provides significant insights for identifying prospective collaborators, benchmark publications, strategic funding, and institutions for future IoT-IAQ researchers.
The global distribution of the macrolide esterase EstX from the alpha/beta hydrolase superfamily

Macrolide antibiotics, pivotal in clinical therapeutics, are confronting resistance challenges mediated by enzymes like macrolide esterases, which are classified into Ere-type and the less studied Est-type. In this study, we provide the biochemical confirmation of EstX, an Est-type macrolide esterase that initially identified as unknown protein in the 1980s. EstX is capable of hydrolyzing four 16-membered ring macrolides, encompassing both veterinary (tylosin, tidipirosin, and tilmicosin) and human-use (leucomycin A5) antibiotics. It uses typical catalytic triad (Asp233-His261-Ser102) from alpha/beta hydrolase superfamily for ester bond hydrolysis. Further genomic context analysis suggests that the dissemination of estX is likely facilitated by mobile genetic elements such as integrons and transposons. The global distribution study indicates that bacteria harboring the estX gene, predominantly pathogenic species like Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, are prevalent in 74 countries across 6 continents. Additionally, the emergence timeline of the estX gene suggests its proliferation may be linked to the overuse of macrolide antibiotics. The widespread prevalence and dissemination of Est-type macrolide esterase highlight an urgent need for enhanced monitoring and in-depth research, underlining its significance as an escalating public health issue.
Stratified analyses refine association between TLR7 rare variants and severe COVID-19

Despite extensive global research into genetic predisposition for severe COVID-19, knowledge on the role of rare host genetic variants and their relation to other risk factors remains limited. Here, 52 genes with prior etiological evidence were sequenced in 1,772 severe COVID-19 cases and 5,347 population-based controls from Spain/Italy. Rare deleterious TLR7 variants were present in 2.4% of young (<60 years) cases with no reported clinical risk factors (n=378), compared to 0.24% of controls (odds ratio (OR)=12.3, p=1.27x10). Incorporation of the results of either functional assays or protein modeling led to a pronounced increase in effect size (OR=46.5, p=1.74x10). Association signals for X-chromosomal TLR7 were also detected in the female-only subgroup, suggesting the existence of additional mechanisms beyond X-linked recessive inheritance in males. Additionally, supporting evidence was generated for a contribution to severe COVID-19 of the previously implicated genes IFNAR2, IFIH1 and TBK1. Our results refine the genetic contribution of rare TLR7 variants to severe COVID-19, and strengthen evidence for the etiological relevance of genes in the interferon signaling pathway.
Development and evaluation of real-time quantitative PCR assays for detection of causing brown root rot disease

Brown root rot disease (BRRD) is a highly destructive tree disease. Early diagnosis of BRRD has been challenging because the first symptoms and signs are often observed after extensive tissue colonization. Existing molecular detection methods, all based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, were developed without testing against global isolates, other wood decay fungi, or host plant tissues. This study developed SYBR Green real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays for . The primer pair Pn_ITS_F/Pn_ITS_R targets the ITS, and the primer pair Pn_NLR_F/Pn_NLR_R targets a -unique group of homologous genes identified through a comparative genomics analysis. The homologous genes belong to the nucleotide-binding-oligomerization-domain-like receptor (NLR) superfamily. The new primer pairs and a previous primer pair G1F/G1R were optimized for qPCR conditions and tested for specificity using 61 global isolates, five other species, and 22 non- wood decay fungal species. While all three primer pairs could detect as little as 100 fg (about 2.99 copies) of genomic DNA, G1F/G1R had the highest specificity and Pn_NLR_F/Pn_NLR_R had the highest efficiency. To avoid false positives, the cutoff Cq values were determined as 34 for G1F/G1R, 29 for Pn_ITS_F/Pn_ITS_R, and 32 for Pn_NLR_F/Pn_NLR_R. We further validated these qPCR assays using seedlings artificially inoculated with , six tree species naturally infected by , rhizosphere soil, and bulk soil. The newly developed qPCR assays provide sensitive detection and quantification of , which is useful for long-term monitoring of BRRD status.
The ethics and practice of perinatal care at the limit of viability: FIGO recommendations

An arbitrary gestational age limit of viability cannot be set, and in clinical practice the focus should be on a periviability interval-the so-called "gray zone" of prognostic uncertainty. For cases within this interval, the most appropriate decision-making process remains debatable and periviability has emerged as one of the greatest challenges in bioethics. Universally recognized ethical principles may be interpreted differently due to socioeconomic, cultural, and religious aspects. In the case of periviability, there is considerable uncertainty over whether interventions result in a greater balance of clinical good over harm. Furthermore, the fetus or neonate is unable to exercise autonomy and the physicians and parents will act as patient surrogates. When parents and physicians disagree about the infant's best interest, a dialogue without paternalistic attitudes is essential, whereby physicians should only offer, but not recommend, perinatal interventions. Parental choice, based on thorough information, should be respected within the limits of what is medically feasible and appropriate. When disagreements between parents and physicians occur, how is consensus to be achieved? Professional guidelines can be helpful as a framework and starting point for discussion. In reality, however, guidelines only rarely draw categorical lines and in many cases remain vague and ambiguously worded. Local ethics committees can provide counseling and function as moderators during discussions, but ethics committees do not have decision precedence. Counseling assumes the most significant role in periviability discussions, taking into consideration the particular fetal and maternal characteristics, as well as parental values. Several caveats should be observed relative to counseling: message fragmentation or inconsistence should be minimized, prognosis should preferably be presented in a positive framing, and overreliance on statistics should be avoided. It is recommended that decisions regarding neonatal resuscitation in the periviability interval be made before birth and not conditional on the newborn's appearance at birth. Regardless of decision, it is important to assure pre- and postnatal coherence. The present article describes how individual physicians, centers, and countries differ in the approach to the decision to initiate or forgo intensive care in the periviability interval. It is impossible to provide a global consensus view and there can be no unifying ethical, moral, or practical strategy. Nevertheless, ethically justified, quality care comprises early involvement of the obstetric and neonatal team to enable a coherent, comprehensible, nonpaternalistic, and balanced plan of care. Ultimately, physicians will need to adjust the expectations to the local standards, local outcome data, and local neonatal support availability.
Atypical cell cycle regulation promotes mammary stem cell expansion during mammary development and tumourigenesis

The cell cycle of mammary stem cells must be tightly regulated to ensure normal homeostasis of the mammary gland to prevent abnormal proliferation and susceptibility to tumorigenesis. The atypical cell cycle regulator, Spy1 can override cell cycle checkpoints, including those activated by the tumour suppressor p53 which mediates mammary stem cell homeostasis. Spy1 has also been shown to promote expansion of select stem cell populations in other developmental systems. Spy1 protein is elevated during proliferative stages of mammary gland development, is found at higher levels in human breast cancers, and promotes susceptibility to mammary tumourigenesis when combined with loss of p53. We hypothesized that Spy1 cooperates with loss of p53 to increase susceptibility to tumour initiation due to changes in susceptible mammary stem cell populations during development and drives the formation of more aggressive stem like tumours.
Detection of hidden antibiotic resistance through real-time genomics

Real-time genomics through nanopore sequencing holds the promise of fast antibiotic resistance prediction directly in the clinical setting. However, concerns about the accuracy of genomics-based resistance predictions persist, particularly when compared to traditional, clinically established diagnostic methods. Here, we leverage the case of a multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infection to demonstrate how real-time genomics can enhance the accuracy of antibiotic resistance profiling in complex infection scenarios. Our results show that unlike established diagnostics, nanopore sequencing data analysis can accurately detect low-abundance plasmid-mediated resistance, which often remains undetected by conventional methods. This capability has direct implications for clinical practice, where such "hidden" resistance profiles can critically influence treatment decisions. Consequently, the rapid, in situ application of real-time genomics holds significant promise for improving clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.

While several models have been created to predict mortality in COVID-19 patients, only a few have shown sufficient accuracy. Machine learning algorithms offer a promising approach to data-driven prediction of clinical outcomes, surpassing traditional statistical modeling. Leveraging machine learning (ML) algorithms could potentially provide a solution for predicting mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Ethiopia. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop and validate machine-learning models for accurately predicting mortality in COVID-19 hospitalized patients in Ethiopia.

Opportunities and challenges to the development and deployment of vaccines for pregnant women in Germany

Maternal immunisation is a powerful tool to protect both pregnant women and their children. A new maternal RSV vaccine holds promise to protect newborns from RSV-associated illness in the first few months of life, but no official recommendation has been made in Germany. Since RSV causes a significant burden of paediatric hospital admissions, we consider it a pertinent opportunity to review barriers to maternal vaccination in Germany, which might also apply to other settings. Access to vaccination for pregnant women in Germany is shaped by an interplay of legal, regulatory, institutional, and sociocultural factors, with a less permissive clinical research environment, delays in recommendation and roll-out, and lower acceptance by healthcare professionals and the population. Actionable recommendations to improve availability and uptake include coordination with other national regulatory bodies to reduce delays, awareness and literacy campaigns for health professionals and the general public, and capacity building for vaccine clinical research.
Natural and polyanionic heparin polysaccharide functionalized upconversion nanoparticles for highly sensitive and selective ratiometric detection of pesticide

Pesticide contamination is a global concern, threatening human health and food safety. Herein, we developed heparin (HEP) functionalized upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)-based ratiometric nanosensor for the sensitive detection of 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline (DCN) pesticide via inner filter effect. The strategy for HEP functionalization of UCNPs is based on adjusting the surface potentials of UCNPs with polyanionic HEP through the electrostatic interaction. UCNPs (NaYbF:Gd/Y/Tm@NaYbF@NaYF) was designed with core-shell-shell structure and extra sensitizer layer for efficient and strong upconversion luminescence (UCL) in the range of UV to NIR. After incorporation of DCN, the upconverted UV emission of UCNPs-HEP ratiometric nanosensor was considerably quenched with the NIR UCL at 800 nm remaining unchanged as internal standard. The UCNPs-HEP ratiometric nanosensor can achieve outstandingly selective and sensitive detection of DCN at the wide linear range of 5-300 μM with a detection limit of 0.41 μM. The remarkable applicability of the UCNPs-HEP ratiometric nanosensor was verified in apple, cucumber and grapes samples. The developed UCNPs-HEP ratiometric nanosensor with excellent biocompatibility and water dispersion capability, is promising for convenient, selective and sensitive sensing of DCN towards food and aqueous samples.

A mixed-methods evaluation of an HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis educational intervention for healthcare providers in a NYC safety-net hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology clinic

Cisgender women and transgender men are less likely to be assessed for PrEP eligibility, prescribed PrEP, or retained in PrEP care. Thus, this pilot PrEP educational intervention was tailored for healthcare providers (HCPs) in obstetrics/gynecology who provide care to cisgender women and transgender men in an academically-affiliated, public hospital women's health clinic. The three-lecture educational curriculum designed for HCPs focused on PrEP eligibility and counseling, formulations and adherence, and prescription and payment assistance programs. Pre- and post-intervention surveys assessed HCP knowledge and barriers to PrEP counseling and prescription. Among  = 49 participants (mean age = 32.8 years; 85.7% cisgender women, mean years practicing = 4.2 years) pre-intervention, 8.7% had prior PrEP training and 61.2% felt very/somewhat uncomfortable prescribing PrEP. Post-intervention, knowledge of PrEP contraindications, eligibility, follow-up care, and assistance programs all increased. HCPs identified key barriers to PrEP care including lack of a dedicated PrEP navigator, culturally and linguistically appropriate patient materials on PrEP resources/costs, and PrEP-related content integrated into EHRs. Ongoing PrEP educational sessions can provide opportunities to practice PrEP counseling, including information on financial assistance. At the institutional level, incorporating PrEP screening in routine clinical practice via EMR prompts, facilitating PrEP medication monitoring, and enhancing telehealth for follow-up care could enhance PrEP prescription.
Late-onset epilepsy clinic: From clinical diagnostics to biomarkers

The unique patho-clinical entity of late-onset epilepsy (LOE), distinguished by its distinct natural history, from its onset to the prognosis it portends, necessitates specialized care. We lack a universally accepted definition, but LOE is typically identified as epilepsy onset after the age of 60 or 65. Unlike epilepsy in younger individuals, LOE is almost by default focal in origin, secondary to acquired etiologies, and presents unique diagnostic and management challenges due to its atypical semiology, higher comorbidity burden, frailty, and increased risks of subsequent stroke and dementia. LOE clinics have been established to address these challenges, providing a multidisciplinary approach to optimize outcomes in patients with new-onset seizures beyond the fifth decade of life. LOE clinics are essential for comprehensive care, offering not only seizure management but also monitoring and addressing associated comorbidities. The care model involves collaboration among neurologists, primary care providers, cardiologists, mental health professionals, and social workers to manage LOE patients' complex needs effectively. The prevalence of cognitive dysfunction in LOE patients underscores the need for regular cognitive assessments and interventions. Biomarker research, particularly involving amyloid beta, offers promising avenues for early diagnosis and a better understanding of the interplay between LOE and Alzheimer's disease. Establishing LOE clinics in major referral centers can enhance provider expertise, improve patient outcomes, and facilitate research to advance diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. In conclusion, LOE clinics play a critical role in addressing the multifaceted needs of older adults with epilepsy, tailored to local resources and challenges, thus enhancing epilepsy care in an aging global population.
Retinoic acid enhances HIV-1 reverse transcription and transcription in macrophages via mTOR-modulated mechanisms

The intestinal environment facilitates HIV-1 infection via mechanisms involving the gut-homing vitamin A-derived retinoic acid (RA), which transcriptionally reprograms CD4 T cells for increased HIV-1 replication/outgrowth. Consistently, colon-infiltrating CD4 T cells carry replication-competent viral reservoirs in people with HIV-1 (PWH) receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART). Intriguingly, integrative infection in colon macrophages, a pool replenished by monocytes, represents a rare event in ART-treated PWH, thus questioning the effect of RA on macrophages. Here, we demonstrate that RA enhances R5 but not X4 HIV-1 replication in monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs). RNA sequencing, gene set variation analysis, and HIV interactor NCBI database interrogation reveal RA-mediated transcriptional reprogramming associated with metabolic/inflammatory processes and HIV-1 resistance/dependency factors. Functional validations uncover post-entry mechanisms of RA action including SAMHD1-modulated reverse transcription and CDK9/RNA polymerase II (RNAPII)-dependent transcription under the control of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). These results support a model in which macrophages residing in the intestine of ART-untreated PWH contribute to viral replication/dissemination in an mTOR-sensitive manner.

Elevated global pollution level is the prime reason that contributes to the onset of various harmful health diseases. The products of Biginelli reaction are enormously used in the pharmaceutical industry as they have antiviral, antibacterial, and calcium channel modulation abilities. This work reports a novel eosin Y sensitized boron graphitic carbon nitride (EY-Bg-CN) as a photocatalyst that efficiently produced 3,4-dihydropyrimidine-2-(1H)-one by the Biginelli reaction of benzaldehyde, urea, and methyl acetoacetate. The photocatalyst EY-Bg-CN showed a successful generation of 3,4-dihydropyrimidine-2-(1H)-one (Biginelli product) in good yield via photocatalysis which is an eco-friendly method and has facile operational process. In addition to the production of Biginelli products, the photocatalyst also showed a remarkable NADH regeneration of 81.18%. The incorporation of g-CN with boron helps increase the surface area and the incorporation of eosin Y which is an inexpensive and non-toxic dye, and in B-g-CN, enhanced the light-harvesting capacity of the photocatalyst. The production of 3,4-dihydropyrimidine-2-(1H)-one and NADH by the EY-B-g-CN photocatalyst is attributed to the requisite band gap, high molar absorbance, low rate of charge recombination, and increased capacity of the photocatalyst to harvest solar light energy.

Human milk composition and infant anthropometrics: overview of a systematic review with clinical and research implications

Despite global public health organizations endorsing breastfeeding or human milk (HM) as the optimal source of nutrition for infants, detailed knowledge of how HM composition influences infant growth is lacking. In this commentary we summarize and interpret the key findings of a large systematic review on HM components and child growth (N = 141 articles included). We highlight the most consistent associations, discuss study quality issues, explore socio-economic and time trends in this body of research, and identify gaps and future research directions.
Acute Kidney Injury in Acute Heart Failure - When to worry and when not to worry?

Acute kidney injury is common in patients with acute decompensated heart failure. It is more common in patients with acute heart failure who suffer from chronic kidney disease. Worsening renal function is often defined as a rise in serum creatinine of more than 0.3 milligrams per deciliter (26.5 µmol/L), which by definition, is acute kidney injury stage one. Perhaps the term acute kidney injury is more appropriate than worsening renal function as it is used universally by nephrologists, internists, and other medical practitioners. In health, the heart and the kidney support each other to maintain body's homeostasis. In disease, the heart and the kidney can adversely affect each other's function causing further clinical deterioration. In patients presenting with acute heart failure and fluid overload, therapy with diuretics for decongestion often causes a rise in serum creatinine and acute kidney injury. However, in the longer term the decongestion improves survival and prevents hospital admissions despite rising serum creatinine and acute kidney injury. It is important to realize that renal venous congestion due to increased right sided heart pressures in acute heart failure is a major cause of kidney dysfunction and hence decongestion therapy improves kidney function in the longer term. This review provides a perspective on the acceptable acute kidney injury with decongestion therapy which is associated with improved survival; as opposed to acute kidney injury due to tubular injury related to sepsis or nephrotoxic drugs, which is associated with poor survival.

Antiviral susceptibility of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses from 3 co-infected pediatric patients

In Japan, influenza activity was low throughout the COVID-19 pandemic until the 2022-23 season, when the first influenza outbreak occurred since the 2020-21 season. In our influenza surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic, co-infection with SARS-CoV-2 and influenza virus had not been detected; however, in January 2024, we identified three pediatric outpatients co-infected with these viruses: one with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron EG.5 sublineage HK.3 and influenza A(H3N2) and two with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.2.86 sublineage JN.1.5 and influenza A(H1N1)pdm09. We evaluated the susceptibility of SARS-CoV-2 against RNA-dependent RNA polymerase inhibitors (remdesivir and molnupiravir) and 3C-like protease inhibitors (nirmatrelvir and ensitrelvir), and that of influenza viruses against neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir, peramivir, zanamivir, and laninamivir) and the cap-dependent endonuclease inhibitor baloxavir. All viruses tested were susceptible to these antiviral drugs and did not possess amino acid substitutions associated with reduced antiviral susceptibility. The patients were treated with anti-influenza drugs and did not develop severe symptoms despite the co-infection. Since SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses continue to evolve, continuous monitoring of their circulation remains essential to assess public health measures and support clinical management.
Racism in obstetric care: a psychometric study of the Gendered Racial Microaggressions Scale among Global Majority birthing people in obstetric contexts

In the United States, maternal health inequities disproportionately affect Global Majority (e.g., Asian, Black, and Hispanic) populations. Despite a substantial body of research underscoring the influence of racism on these inequities, little research has examined how experiences of gendered racial microaggressions during pregnancy and birth impact racially and ethnically diverse Global Majority pregnant and birthing people in obstetric hospital settings. We evaluated the psychometric properties of an adapted version of Lewis & Neville's Gendered Racial Microaggressions Scale, using data collected from 417 Global Majority birthing people. Findings from our study indicate that our adapted GRMS is a valid tool for assessing the experiences of gendered racial microaggressions in hospital-based obstetric care settings among Global Majority pregnant and birthing people whose preferred languages are English or Spanish. Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis demonstrated high construct validity of the adapted GRMS scale (Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.1089 (95% CI 0.0921, 0.1263), Comparative Fit Index = 0.977, Standardized Root Mean Square Residual = 0.075, log-likelihood c2 = -85.6, df = 8). IRT analyses demonstrated that the unidimensional model was preferred to the bi-dimensional model as it was more interpretable, had lower AIC and BIC, and all items had large discrimination parameters onto a single factor (all discrimination parameters > 3.0). Given that we found similar response profiles among Black and Hispanic respondents, our Differential Item Functioning analyses support validity among Black, Hispanic, and Spanish-speaking birthing people. Inter-item correlations demonstrated adequate scale reliability, α = 0.97, and empirical reliability = 0.67. Pearsons correlations was used to assess the criterion validity of our adapted scale. Our scale's total score was significantly and positively related to postpartum depression and anxiety. Researchers and practitioners should seek to address instances of gendered racial microaggressions in obstetric settings, as they are manifestations of systemic and interpersonal racism, and impact postpartum health.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a pervasive global health issue with substantial morbidity and mortality, often resulting in secondary complications, including diabetic wounds (DWs). These wounds, arising from hyperglycemia, diabetic neuropathy, anemia, and ischemia, afflict approximately 15% of diabetic patients, with a considerable 25% at risk of lower limb amputations. The conventional approaches for chronic and diabetic wounds management involves utilizing various therapeutic substances and techniques, encompassing growth factors, skin substitutes and wound dressings. In parallel, emerging cell therapy approaches, notably involving adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs), have demonstrated significant promise in addressing diabetes mellitus and its complications. ADMSCs play a pivotal role in wound repair, and their derived exosomes have garnered attention for their therapeutic potential. This review aimed to unravel the potential mechanisms and provide an updated overview of the role of ADMSCs and their exosomes in diabetes mellitus and its associated complications, with a specific focus on wound healing.

Association between post-COVID-19 conditions and male semen quality in Japan: a descriptive investigation

Some reports suggest that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may affect male reproductive function. There is also concern in Japan that COVID-19 may contribute to the pre-existing decline in male fertility; however, no studies have investigated the effects of COVID-19 on male reproductive function. In this study, we aimed to analyze the semen quality of men who had recovered from COVID-19. Male patients who had recovered from COVID-19 between February 2020 and September 2021 were recruited for this study. Participants were sent a semen collection kit; they were asked to collect semen at home and deliver it to a laboratory at Osaka University. We used these samples to analyze sperm concentration, total sperm count, and semen volume. In total, 125 participants were included in this study. The median age of all patients was 46 years (interquartile range (IQR): 38-52 years). The severity of COVID-19 was mild in 80 patients; 19 were moderate I, 22 were moderate II, and four were severe. The median semen volume was 2.5 mL (IQR: 1.8-3.1), the median sperm concentration was 98.9 million/mL (IQR: 43.8-162.2), and the median total sperm count was 212.1 million (IQR: 89.7-368.2). In a previous study in Japan, the median sperm count in adult men was reported to be 201 million. Participants in our study did not have lower sperm counts than this, despite their older age. Our results suggest that the long-term effects of COVID-19 on spermatogenesis are minimal.
The proteogenomic landscape of multiple myeloma reveals insights into disease biology and therapeutic opportunities

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell malignancy of the bone marrow. Despite therapeutic advances, MM remains incurable, and better risk stratification as well as new therapies are therefore highly needed. The proteome of MM has not been systematically assessed before and holds the potential to uncover insight into disease biology and improved prognostication in addition to genetic and transcriptomic studies. Here we provide a comprehensive multiomics analysis including deep tandem mass tag-based quantitative global (phospho)proteomics, RNA sequencing, and nanopore DNA sequencing of 138 primary patient-derived plasma cell malignancies encompassing treatment-naive MM, plasma cell leukemia and the premalignancy monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, as well as healthy controls. We found that the (phospho)proteome of malignant plasma cells are highly deregulated as compared with healthy plasma cells and is both defined by chromosomal alterations as well as posttranscriptional regulation. A prognostic protein signature was identified that is associated with aggressive disease independent of established risk factors in MM. Integration with functional genetics and single-cell RNA sequencing revealed general and genetic subtype-specific deregulated proteins and pathways in plasma cell malignancies that include potential targets for (immuno)therapies. Our study demonstrates the potential of proteogenomics in cancer and provides an easily accessible resource for investigating protein regulation and new therapeutic approaches in MM.
Research progress in the treatment of schistosomiasis with traditional Chinese medicine

Plekhm2 acts as an autophagy modulator in murine heart and cardiofibroblasts

Plekhm2 is a protein regulating endosomal trafficking and lysosomal distribution. We recently linked a recessive inherited mutation in PLEKHM2 to a familial form of dilated cardiomyopathy and left ventricular non-compaction. These patients' primary fibroblasts exhibited abnormal lysosomal distribution and autophagy impairment. We therefore hypothesized that loss of PLEKHM2 impairs cardiac function via autophagy derangement. Here, we characterized the roles of Plekhm2 in the heart using global Plekhm2 knockout (PLK2-KO) mice and cultured cardiac cells. Compared to littermate controls (WT), young PLK2-KO mice exhibited no difference in heart function or autophagy markers but demonstrated higher basal AKT phosphorylation. Older PLK2-KO mice had body and heart growth retardation and increased LC3II protein levels. PLK2-KO mice were more vulnerable to fasting and, interestingly, impaired autophagy was noted in vitro, in Plekhm2-deficient cardiofibroblasts but not in cardiomyocytes. PLK2-KO hearts appeared to be less sensitive to pathological hypertrophy induced by angiotensin-II compared to WT. Our findings suggest a role of Plekhm2 in murine cardiac autophagy. Plekhm2 deficiency impaired autophagy in cardiofibroblasts, but the autophagy in cardiomyocytes is not critically dependent on Plekhm2. The absence of Plekhm2 in mice appears to promote compensatory mechanism(s) enabling the heart to manage angiotensin-II-induced stress without detrimental consequences.
Overlooked Volcanic Effect during Transmission of Antibiotic Resistance Genes Induced by Copper and Zinc

Adding heavy metals such as copper and zinc to animal feeds is common practice to promote growth, but meanwhile has side consequence of enhancing spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil. This presents a global challenge to food security and human health. We in this study investigated the transmission of typical ARGs, i. e. β-lactamase genes (β-RGs), in dairy farm environments where dietary Cu and Zn were present in a wide range of concentration. The β-RGs were demonstrated to be highly prevalent across environmental media, with a relative abundance of 94.55%, dominated by mechanisms of antibiotic deactivation (93.75%) and cellular protection (6.25%). More importantly, we first found the transmission of ARGs to be highly dependent on the overlooked volcanic effect, i. e. low-concentration Cu (12-22 mg/kg) and Zn (45-80 mg/kg) acted as micronutrients necessary for microbial growth but facilitated ARGs transfer, whereas higher-concentration Cu (22-39 mg/kg) and Zn (80-153 mg/kg) became toxic to microbial communities and gene expression patterns. Notably, the specific microbial phyla Proteobacteria (2.28-82.94%), Bacteroidetes (0.02-56.48%) and Actinobacteria (1.62-12.92%) exhibited resistance at low concentration of Cu and Zn, which enhanced the transmission of β-RGs. However, this process was inhibited at higher concentration due to inactivation of microbes by Cu and Zn. The increase in resistance was first observed in class Gammaproteobacteria (2.02-88.51%) and Alphaproteobacteria (0.68-10.1%) with increased Cu and Zn concentration. This resulted in heightened transfer of ARGs by tnpA-07 (80.35%) due to protection of thicker cell membrane by chelation with Cu and Zn. This study not only offers mechanistic insights into the volcanic effect of dietary metals on dissemination of ARGs, but also has important implications for safe management of agricultural settings.

Radiology in Canada is advancing through innovations in clinical practices and research methodologies. Recent developments focus on refining evidence-based practice guidelines, exploring innovative imaging techniques and enhancing diagnostic processes through artificial intelligence. Within the global radiology community, Canadian institutions play an important role by engaging in international collaborations, such as with the American College of Radiology to refine implementation of the Ovarian-Adnexal Reporting and Data System for ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. Additionally, researchers have participated in multidisciplinary collaborations to evaluate the performance of artificial intelligence-driven diagnostic tools for chronic liver disease and pediatric brain tumors. Depersonalisation-derealisation disorder (DDD) is characterised by distressing experiences of separation from oneself and/or one's surroundings, potentially resulting from alterations in affective, cognitive, and physiological functions. This systematic review aimed to synthesise current experimental evidence of relevance to proposed mechanisms underlying DDD, to appraise existing theoretical models, and to inform future research and theoretical developments. Studies were included if they tested explicit hypotheses in DDD samples, with experimental manipulations of at least one independent variable, alongside behavioural, subjective, neurological, affective and/or physiological dependent variables. Some evidence for diminished subjective responsivity to aversive images and sounds, and hyperactivation in neurocircuits associated with emotional regulation when viewing aversive images emerged, corroborating neurobiological models of DDD. Inconsistencies were present regarding behavioural and autonomic responsivity to facial expressions, emotional memory, and self-referential processing. Common confounds included small sample sizes, medication, and comorbidities. Alterations in affective reactivity and regulation appear to be present in DDD; however, further research employing more rigorous research designs is required to provide stronger evidence for these possible mechanisms.

Effect of polygenic scores of telomere length alleles on telomere length in newborns and parents

In adults, polygenic scores (PGSs) of telomere length (TL) alleles explain about 4.5% of the variance in TL, as measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Yet, these PGSs strongly infer a causal role of telomeres in aging-related diseases. To better understand the determinants of TL through the lifespan, it is essential to examine to what extent these PGSs explain TL in newborns. This study investigates the effect of PGSs on TL in both newborns and their parents, with TL measured by Southern blotting and expressed in base-pairs (bp). Additionally, the study explores the impact of PGSs related to transmitted or non-transmitted alleles on TL in newborns. For parents and newborns, the PGS effects on TL were 172 bp (p =  2.03 × 10) and 161 bp (p =  3.06 × 10), explaining 6.6% and 5.2% of the TL variance, respectively. The strongest PGS effect was shown for maternally transmitted alleles in newborn girls, amounting to 214 bp (p =  3.77 × 10) and explaining 7.8% of the TL variance. The PGS effect of non-transmitted alleles was 56 bp (p = 0.0593) and explained 0.6% of the TL variance. Our findings highlight the importance of TL genetics in understanding early-life determinants of TL. They point to the potential utility of PGSs composed of TL alleles in identifying susceptibility to aging-related diseases from birth and reveal the presence of sexual dimorphism in the effect of TL alleles on TL in newborns. Finally, we attribute the higher TL variance explained by PGSs in our study to TL measurement by Southern blotting.
Associations between metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely related to metabolic syndrome and remains a major global health burden. The increased prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) worldwide has contributed to the rising incidence of NAFLD. It is widely believed that atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is associated with NAFLD. In the past decade, the clinical implications of NAFLD have gone beyond liver-related morbidity and mortality, with a majority of patient deaths attributed to malignancy, coronary heart disease (CHD), and other cardiovascular (CVD) complications. To better define fatty liver disease associated with metabolic disorders, experts proposed a new term in 2020 - metabolic dysfunction associated with fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Along with this new designation, updated diagnostic criteria were introduced, resulting in some differentiation between NAFLD and MAFLD patient populations, although there is overlap. The aim of this review is to explore the relationship between MAFLD and ASCVD based on the new definitions and diagnostic criteria, while briefly discussing potential mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease in patients with MAFLD.
Prenatal exposure to benzodiazepine and z-hypnotics and fifth-grade scholastic skills - emulating target trials using data from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study

Evidence is limited regarding the effect of prenatal benzodiazepine and z-hypnotic exposure and long-term neurodevelopment in childhood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of initiating benzodiazepine or z-hypnotic treatment in early, mid and late pregnancy on fifth-grade numeracy and literacy scholastic skills in children, by emulating three target trials. The trials are identical except for the timing of enrollment and the number of eligible individuals. Eligibility to the trials required a history of anxiety and/or depression prior to pregnancy. We used data from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study, linked to the Medical Birth Registry of Norway, to emulate the trials. We adjusted for baseline covariates that were available at time 0 for each trial by inverse probability of treatment weighting using the propensity score. The findings of this study did not show any effect of mothers' initiation of treatment with benzodiazepines or z-hypnotics in early, mid or late pregnancy on the children's 5th grade test scores in numeracy and literacy. The study results provide reassurance for patients in need of benzodiazepines and z-hypnotics during pregnancy; however, these findings need to be interpreted with caution due to low study power in some of the analyses.
Efficacy of topical treatments for mild-to-moderate acne: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized control trials

Acne is a common skin condition, but little data exist on the comparative efficacy of topical acne therapies. We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of topical therapies for mild-to-moderate acne. Searches in PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane CENTRAL via Ovid, Embase via Ovid and Web of Science were conducted on 29 November 2021. Randomized controlled trials examining ≥12 weeks of topical treatments for acne vulgaris in subjects aged 12 and older were included. Main outcomes were absolute or percent change in acne lesion count and treatment success on the Investigator's Global Assessment scale. Thirty-five randomized clinical trials with 33,472 participants comparing nine different topical agents were included. Adapalene-benzoyl peroxide (BPO), clindamycin-BPO and clindamycin-tretinoin demonstrated the greatest reduction in non-inflammatory (ratio of means [RoM] 1.76; 95% CI [1.46; 2.12], RoM 1.70; 95% CI [1.44; 2.02] and RoM 1.87; 95% CI [1.53; 2.30], respectively), inflammatory (RoM 1.56; 95% CI [1.44; 1.70], RoM 1.49; 95% CI [1.39; 1.60] and RoM 1.48; 95% CI [1.36; 1.61], respectively) and total lesion count (ROM 1.67; 95% CI [1.47; 1.90], RoM 1.59; 95% CI [1.42; 1.79] and RoM 1.64; 95% CI [1.42; 1.89], respectively) compared to placebo. All single agents outperformed placebo except tazarotene, which did not significantly outperform placebo for inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesion count reduction. Most combination agents significantly outperformed their individual components in lesion count reduction and global assessment scores, except for clindamycin-tretinoin and clindamycin-BPO, which did not significantly outperform tretinoin (RoM 1.13; 95% CI [0.94; 1.36]) and BPO (RoM = 1.15, 95% CI [0.98; 1.36]), respectively, for non-inflammatory lesion reduction. There was no significant difference amongst most single agents when evaluating lesion count reduction. Combination agents are generally most effective for mild-to-moderate acne; however for non-inflammatory acne, the addition of clindamycin in topical regimens is unnecessary and should be avoided.
Switching tinnitus on or off: An initial investigation into the role of the pregenual and rostral to dorsal anterior cingulate cortices

Research indicates that hearing loss significantly contributes to tinnitus, but it alone doesn't fully explain its occurrence, as many people with hearing loss do not experience tinnitus. To identify a secondary factor for tinnitus generation, we examined a unique dataset of individuals with intermittent chronic tinnitus, who experience fluctuating periods of tinnitus. EEGs of healthy controls were compared to EEGs of participants who reported perceiving tinnitus on certain days, but no tinnitus on other days.. The EEG data revealed that tinnitus onset is associated with increased theta activity in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and decreased theta functional connectivity between the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and the auditory cortex. Additionally, there is increased alpha effective connectivity from the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex to the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex. When tinnitus is not perceived, differences from healthy controls include increased alpha activity in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and heightened alpha connectivity between the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and auditory cortex. This suggests that tinnitus is triggered by a switch involving increased theta activity in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and decreased theta connectivity between the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and auditory cortex, leading to increased theta-gamma cross-frequency coupling, which correlates with tinnitus loudness. Increased alpha activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex correlates with distress. Conversely, increased alpha activity in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex can transiently suppress the phantom sound by enhancing theta connectivity to the auditory cortex. This mechanism parallels chronic neuropathic pain and suggests potential treatments for tinnitus by promoting alpha activity in the pregenual anterior cingulate cortex and reducing alpha activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex through pharmacological or neuromodulatory approaches.

Key mechanisms such as endocytosis, receptor-mediated uptake, and membrane fusion are explored, alongside innovative delivery vehicles and technologies that enhance siRNA delivery efficiency. Moreover, the article discusses challenges and opportunities in the field, including issues related to specificity, biodistribution, immune response, and clinical translation. The prevalence of anemia during pregnancy and its correlates vary by trimester and hemoglobin assessment method in Eastern Maharashtra, India

Approximately half of pregnant women in India are anemic, representing over 7.5 million women. Few studies have assessed the relationship between multiple micronutrient deficiencies and anemia during pregnancy or the trajectory of hemoglobin (Hb) during pregnancy in low-resource settings. We enrolled 200 pregnant women from the Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) registry, a population-based pregnancy and birth registry in Eastern Maharashtra, India to address these gaps. The women provided capillary (finger-prick) and venous blood specimens at enrollment (<15 weeks), and a second capillary specimen in the 3rd trimester (>27 weeks). Capillary specimens were analyzed at the time of collection with a HemoCue Hb 201+; venous specimens were shipped on dry ice to a laboratory for cyanmethemoglobin assessment. In the 1st trimester, mean Hb concentration and anemia (Hb<11.0 g/dL) prevalence using capillary specimens were 10.9 ± 1.5 g/dL and 51.1%; mean Hb concentration using venous blood specimens was estimated to be 11.3 ± 1.3 g/dL and anemia prevalence was 37.5%. The prevalence of iron, vitamin B and folate deficiencies were 40%, 30% and 0%, respectively. Among women with anemia in the 1st trimester (venous blood), 56% had concurrent iron deficiency (inflammation-adjusted serum ferritin <15 µg/L) indicating that their anemia may be amenable to iron supplementation. In total, 21% of women had ID and anemia, 19% ID in the absence of anemia, 16.5% anemia in the absence of ID and 43.5% had neither. By the 3rd trimester, mean Hb from capillary specimens had declined to 10.1 ± 1.35 g/dL and anemia prevalence increased to 70.7%, despite 99.4% mothers reporting receipt of iron-folic acid (IFA) supplements during her current pregnancy, and 83.9% reporting IFA consumption the previous day. Significant predictors of anemia in the 1st trimester (both venous and capillary) included the number of weeks gestation at the time of Hb assessment and inflammation-adjusted serum ferritin. For 3rd trimester anemia, significant predictors included 1st trimester height, BMI and IFA consumption during the 3rd trimester (but not 1st trimester micronutrient biomarkers), indicating that IFA supplementation over the course of pregnancy may have influenced micronutrient status and anemia risk. Our findings highlight the severity of the burden of anemia and micronutrient deficiencies in Eastern Maharashtra, but also highlight that in many cases, ID and anemia affect different individuals. Preventing and managing anemia in pregnancy in India will require strengthening both clinical and community-based strategies targeting iron deficiency, as well as other causes of anemia.
hnRNPAB inhibits influenza A virus infection by disturbing polymerase activity

Influenza A virus (IAV) continuously poses a considerable threat to global health through seasonal epidemics and recurring pandemics. IAV RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (FluPol) mediate the transcription of RNA and replication of the viral genome. Searching for targets that inhibit viral polymerase activity helps us develop better antiviral drugs. Here, we identified heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A/B (hnRNPAB) as an anti-influenza host factor. hnRNPAB interacts with NP of IAV to inhibit the interaction between PB1 and NP, which is dependent on the 5-amino-acid peptide of the hnRNPAB C-terminal domain (aa 318-322). We further found that the 5-amino-acid peptide blocks the interaction between PB1 and NP to destroy the FluPol activity. In vivo studies demonstrate that hnRNPAB-deficient mice display higher viral burdens, enhanced cytokine production, and increased mortality after influenza infection. These data demonstrate that hnRNPAB perturbs FluPol complex conformation to inhibit IAV infection, providing insights into anti-influenza defense mechanisms.

The complex role of Rcor2: Regulates mesenchymal stromal cell differentiation in vitro but is dispensable in vivo

Recent research has revealed several important pathways of epigenetic regulation leading to transcriptional changes in bone cells. Rest Corepressor 2 (Rcor2) is a coregulator of Lysine-specific histone demethylase 1 (Lsd1), a demethylase linked to osteoblast activity, hematopoietic stem cell differentiation and malignancy of different neoplasms. However, the role of Rcor2 in osteoblast differentiation has not yet been examined in detail. We have previously shown that Rcor2 is highly expressed in mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) and particularly in the osteoblastic lineage. The role of Rcor2 in osteoblastic differentiation in vitro was further characterized and we demonstrate here that lentiviral silencing of Rcor2 in MC3T3-E1 cells led to a decrease in osteoblast differentiation. This was indicated by decreased alkaline phosphatase and von Kossa stainings as well as by decreased expression of several osteoblast-related marker genes. RNA-sequencing of the Rcor2-downregulated MC3T3-E1 cells showed decreased repression of Rcor2 target genes, as well as significant upregulation of majority of the differentially expressed genes. While the heterozygous, global loss of Rcor2 in vivo did not lead to a detectable bone phenotype, conditional deletion of Rcor2 in limb-bud mesenchymal cells led to a moderate decrease in cortical bone volume. These findings were not accentuated by challenging bone formation by ovariectomy or tibial fracture. Furthermore, a global deletion of Rcor2 led to decreased white adipose tissue in vivo and decreased the capacity of primary cells to differentiate into adipocytes in vitro. The conditional deletion of Rcor2 led to decreased adiposity in fracture callus. Taken together, these results suggest that epigenetic regulation of mesenchymal stromal cell differentiation is mediated by Rcor2, which could thus play an important role in defining the MSC fate.

An under-recognised aspect of the current humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is the impact of the war on the environment and the associated risks for human health. This commentary contextualises these impacts against the background of human suffering produced by the overwhelming violence associated with the use of military force against the general population of Gaza. In calling for an immediate cessation to the violence, the authors draw attention to the urgent need to rebuild the health care system and restore the physical and human infrastructure that makes a liveable environment possible and promotes human health and well-being, especially for the most vulnerable in the population. Environmental remediation should therefore form one of the most important parts of international efforts to assist reconstruction, through which we hope Palestinians and Israelis will achieve lasting peace, health, and sustainable development, all as part of accepted international human rights obligations.

Neonatal sepsis remains one of the key challenges of neonatal medicine, and together with preterm birth, causes almost 50% of all deaths globally for children younger than 5 years. Compared with advances achieved for other serious neonatal and early childhood conditions globally, progress in reducing neonatal sepsis has been much slower, especially in low-resource settings that have the highest burden of neonatal sepsis morbidity and mortality. By contrast to sepsis in older patients, there is no universally accepted neonatal sepsis definition. This poses substantial challenges in clinical practice, research, and health-care management, and has direct practical implications, such as diagnostic inconsistency, heterogeneous data collection and surveillance, and inappropriate treatment, health-resource allocation, and education. As the clinical manifestation of neonatal sepsis is frequently non-specific and the current diagnostic standard blood culture has performance limitations, new improved diagnostic techniques are required to guide appropriate and warranted antimicrobial treatment. Although antimicrobial therapy and supportive care continue as principal components of neonatal sepsis therapy, refining basic neonatal care to prevent sepsis through education and quality improvement initiatives remains paramount.
Exploring the potential of genetic analysis in historical blood spots for patients with iodine-deficient goiter and thyroid carcinomas in Switzerland and Germany (1929-1989)

Iodine deficiency-induced goiter continues to be a global public health concern, with varying manifestations based on geography, patient's age, and sex. To gain insights into clinical occurrences, a retrospective study analyzed medical records from patients with iodine deficiency-induced goiter or thyroid cancer who underwent surgery at the Community Hospital in Riehen, Switzerland, between 1929 and 1989. Despite today's adequate iodine supplementation, a significant risk for iodine-independent goiter remains in Switzerland, suggesting that genetic factors, among others, might be involved. Thus, a pilot study exploring the feasibility of genetic analysis of blood spots from these medical records was conducted to investigate and enhance the understanding of goiter development, potentially identify genetic variations, and explore the influence of dietary habits and other environmental stimuli on the disease.Blood prints from goiter patients' enlarged organs were collected per decade from medical records. These prints had been made by pressing, drawing, or tracing (i.e., pressed and drawn) the removed organs onto paper sheets. DNA analysis revealed that its yields varied more between the prints than between years. A considerable proportion of the samples exhibited substantial DNA degradation unrelated to sample collection time and DNA mixtures of different contributors. Thus, each goiter imprint must be individually evaluated and cannot be used to predict the success rate of genetic analysis in general. Collecting a large sample or the entire blood ablation for genetic analysis is recommended to mitigate potential insufficient DNA quantities. Researchers should also consider degradation and external biological compounds' impact on the genetic analysis of interest, with the dominant contributor anticipated to originate from the patient's blood.
The clinical research on ginger (Zingiber officinale): Insights from ClinicalTrials.gov analysis

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has a rich history of traditional medicinal use and has attracted a global interest in its health benefits. This study aims to provide insights into the clinical research landscape on ginger, focusing on its pharmacological effects and studied health-related outcomes. The study design involves systematic analysis of data from clinical trials available on ClinicalTrials.gov and discussion of findings in the context of the existing scientific knowledge. A comprehensive analysis of clinical trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov related to ginger was first conducted, and the scientific background related to specific ginger clinical research avenues was further evaluated through PubMed searches. A variety of trial designs were identified, including treatment, prevention, and supportive care objectives. A total of 188 studies were identified on ClinicalTrials.gov, of which 89 met the inclusion criteria. Among the 89 trials, treatment objectives were predominant (47.2%), and dietary supplements (40.4%) and drugs (27%) were the most prevalent intervention types. These trials covered various health outcomes, such as antiemetic activity, analgesic function, effects on health-related quality of life, blood pressure variation, energy expenditure, and reduction of xerostomia. This study analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the clinical trials landscape on ginger, focusing on its broad spectrum of potential health benefits. While individual trials show promising results, a significant gap in the available data with a low reporting rate of final results is identified, underscoring the need for further research to establish conclusive evidence of ginger's therapeutic potentials.

Crosstalk between genomic variants and DNA methylation in FLT3 mutant acute myeloid leukemia

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of blood cancer with diverse genetic variations and DNA methylation alterations. By studying the interaction of gene mutations, expression, and DNA methylation, we aimed to gain valuable insights into the processes that lead to block differentiation in AML. We analyzed TCGA-LAML data (173 samples) with RNA sequencing and DNA methylation arrays, comparing FLT3 mutant (48) and wild-type (125) cases. We conducted differential gene expression analysis using cBioPortal, identified DNA methylation differences with ChAMP tool, and correlated them with gene expression changes. Gene set enrichment analysis (g:Profiler) revealed significant biological processes and pathways. ShinyGo and GeneCards were used to find potential transcription factors and their binding sites among significant genes. We found significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs) negatively correlated with their most significant methylation probes (Pearson correlation coefficient of -0.49, P-value <0.001) between FLT3 mutant and wild-type groups. Moreover, our exploration of 450 k CpG sites uncovered a global hypo-methylated status in 168 DEGs. Notably, these methylation changes were enriched in the promoter regions of Homebox superfamily gene, which are crucial in transcriptional-regulating pathways in blood cancer. Furthermore, in FLT3 mutant AML patient samples, we observed overexpress of WT1, a transcription factor known to bind homeobox gene family. This finding suggests a potential mechanism by which WT1 recruits TET2 to demethylate specific genomic regions. Integrating gene expression and DNA methylation analyses shed light on the impact of FLT3 mutations on cancer cell development and differentiation, supporting a two-hit model in AML. This research advances understanding of AML and fosters targeted therapeutic strategy development.

Assessing population-level target product profiles of universal human influenza A vaccines

Influenza A has two hemagglutinin groups, with stronger cross-immunity to reinfection within than between groups. Here, we explore the implications of this heterogeneity for proposed cross-protective influenza vaccines that may offer broad, but not universal, protection. While the development goal for the breadth of human influenza A vaccine is to provide cross-group protection, vaccines in current development stages may provide better protection against target groups than non-target groups. To evaluate vaccine formulation and strategies, we propose a novel perspective: a vaccine population-level target product profile (PTPP). Under this perspective, we use dynamical models to quantify the epidemiological impacts of future influenza A vaccines as a function of their properties. Our results show that the interplay of natural and vaccine-induced immunity could strongly affect seasonal subtype dynamics. A broadly protective bivalent vaccine could lower the incidence of both groups and achieve elimination with sufficient vaccination coverage. However, a univalent vaccine at low vaccination rates could permit a resurgence of the non-target group when the vaccine provides weaker immunity than natural infection. Moreover, as a proxy for pandemic simulation, we analyze the invasion of a variant that evades natural immunity. We find that a future vaccine providing sufficiently broad and long-lived cross-group protection at a sufficiently high vaccination rate, could prevent pandemic emergence and lower the pandemic burden. This study highlights that as well as effectiveness, breadth and duration should be considered in epidemiologically informed TPPs for future human influenza A vaccines.
The limits of fair medical imaging AI in real-world generalization

As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly approaches human-level performance in medical imaging, it is crucial that it does not exacerbate or propagate healthcare disparities. Previous research established AI's capacity to infer demographic data from chest X-rays, leading to a key concern: do models using demographic shortcuts have unfair predictions across subpopulations? In this study, we conducted a thorough investigation into the extent to which medical AI uses demographic encodings, focusing on potential fairness discrepancies within both in-distribution training sets and external test sets. Our analysis covers three key medical imaging disciplines-radiology, dermatology and ophthalmology-and incorporates data from six global chest X-ray datasets. We confirm that medical imaging AI leverages demographic shortcuts in disease classification. Although correcting shortcuts algorithmically effectively addresses fairness gaps to create 'locally optimal' models within the original data distribution, this optimality is not true in new test settings. Surprisingly, we found that models with less encoding of demographic attributes are often most 'globally optimal', exhibiting better fairness during model evaluation in new test environments. Our work establishes best practices for medical imaging models that maintain their performance and fairness in deployments beyond their initial training contexts, underscoring critical considerations for AI clinical deployments across populations and sites.
PET imaging for a very early detection of rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder and Parkinson's disease - A model-based cost-effectiveness analysis

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative condition after Alzheimer's disease and it represents one of the fastest emerging neurological diseases worldwide. PD is usually diagnosed after the third decade of life with symptoms like tremors at rest and muscle stiffness. Rapid Eye Movement sleep behavioral disorder (RBD) is another disorder that is caused by a loss of typical muscle relaxation during sleep with a lot of motor activity. Usually, RBD is strongly associated with PD. Recent studies have demonstrated that PD reduces the life expectancy of patients to 10 and 20 years after being diagnosed. In addition, delayed diagnosis and treatment of these neurological disorders have significant socio-economic impacts on patients, their partners and on the general public. Often, it is not clear about PD associated financial burdens both in low and high-income countries. On the other hand, PD triggers neurological variations that affect differences in the dopamine transporter (DAT) and in glucose metabolism. Therefore, positron emission tomography (PET) using specific DAT radiotracers and fluorine-18 labeled desoxyglucose (FDG) has being considered a key imaging technique that could be applied clinically for the very early diagnosis of RBD and in PD. However, a few myths about PET is that it is very expensive. Here, we looked at the cost of treatment of PD and RBD in relation to early PET imaging. Our finding suggests that PET imaging might also be a cost sparing diagnostic option in the management of patients with PD and RBD, not only for first world countries as it is the case now but also for the third world countries. Therefore, PET is a cost-effective imaging technique for very early diagnostic of RBD and PD.
Adherence to the planetary health diet and cognitive decline: findings from the ELSA-Brasil study

The EAT-Lancet Commission proposed a planetary health diet to improve human health within planetary boundaries; however, little is known about the association between adherence to this diet and cognitive decline. We used data from three waves of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health to evaluate the association between the planetary health diet and cognitive decline using linear mixed-effects models. Here we show that in 11,737 participants (mean (s.d.) age 51.6 (9.0) years, 54% women and 53% white), higher adherence to the planetary health diet was associated with slower memory decline (P = 0.046) and that income was a modifier in this association (P < 0.001). Adherence to the planetary health diet was associated with slower decline of memory (P = 0.040) and global cognition (P = 0.009) in high-income participants. No association was found among low-income participants. The results of our study highlight that the promotion of healthy dietary patterns should take into consideration income barriers as well as differences in dietary habits to achieve high adherence.
Cognitive performance in adults with post-COVID syndrome: Results from a German case-control study

Numerous studies on post-COVID syndrome (PCS) describe persisting symptoms of cognitive impairment. Previous studies, however, often investigated small samples or did not assess covariates possibly linked to cognitive performance. We aimed to describe 1) global and domain-specific cognitive performance in adults with PCS, controls with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection and healthy controls, 2) associations of sociodemographics, depressive symptoms, anxiety, fatigue, somatic symptoms and stress with cognitive performance and subjective cognitive decline (SCD), using data of the LIFE-Long-COVID-Study from Leipzig, Germany. Group differences in cognitive performance and associations with sociodemographic and neuropsychiatric covariates were assessed using multivariable regression analyses. Our study included n = 561 adults (M: 48.8, SD: 12.7; % female: 70.6). Adults with PCS (n = 410) performed worse in tests on episodic memory (b = -1.07, 95 % CI: -1.66, -0.48) and visuospatial abilities (b = -3.92, 95 % CI: -6.01, -1.83) compared to healthy controls (n = 64). No impairments were detected for executive function, verbal fluency, and global cognitive performance. Odds of SCD were not higher in PCS. A previous SARS-CoV-2 infection without PCS (n = 87) was not linked to cognitive impairment. Higher age and higher levels of stress and fatigue were linked to worse performance in several cognitive domains. Routine administration of tests for episodic memory and visuospatial abilities might aid in the identification of individuals at risk for cognitive impairment when reporting symptoms of PCS. Low numbers of participants with severe COVID-19 infections possibly limit generalizability of our findings.

Bimetallic metal-organic framework aerogels supported by aramid nanofibers for efficient CO capture

The excessive CO emission has gained global attentions due to its potential effects on climate change, plant nutrition deterioration, and human health and safety. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featured with high specific surface area, adjustable pore size, and tailorable morphology have been widely applied for CO capture. However, some drawbacks of poor mechanical stability and uneven distribution of mesopores limit their further applications. Herein, we demonstrate a one-step synthesis of bimetallic center framework (OSSBCF) and pore reconstruction (PRC) strategy to prepare the hierarchical porous Zn/Co-ZIF@ANF aerogels. This unique design achieves the construction of efficient gas transfer channels and creates massive micropores with abundant Lewis basic adsorption sites. Benefiting from theses merits, the bimetallic Zn/Co-ZIF@ANF aerogels demonstrate high MOFs loading mass of 47.51 wt%, high specific surface area of 686.39 mg, and large porosity of 99.31 %. Moreover, the bimetallic Zn/Co-ZIF@ANF aerogels exhibit an enhanced CO adsorption capacity of 5.99 mmol/g and CO/N adsorption selectivity of 35 at 25 °C and 1 bar. The CO capacity of bimetallic Zn/Co-ZIF@ANF aerogels keep up to 95.19 % after ten cycles of CO adsorption, indicating the excellent long-term recycle stability. Therefore, this study provides a promising strategy to engineer hierarchical porous bimetallic MOF aerogels toward practical CO capture.
Hyaluronidase inhibitor delphinidin inhibits cancer metastasis

Cancer remains a formidable global health challenge, with metastasis being a key contributor to its lethality. Abundant high molecular mass hyaluronic acid, a major non-protein component of extracellular matrix, protects naked mole rats from cancer and reduces cancer incidence in mice. Hyaluronidase plays a critical role in degrading hyaluronic acid and is frequently overexpressed in metastatic cancer. Here we investigated the potential of targeting hyaluronidases to reduce metastasis. A high throughput screen identified delphinidin, a natural plant compound found in fruits and vegetables, as a potent hyaluronidase inhibitor. Delphinidin-mediated inhibition of hyaluronidase activity led to an increase in high molecular weight hyaluronic acid in cell culture and in mouse tissues, and reduced migration and invasion behavior of breast, prostate, and melanoma cancer cells. Moreover, delphinidin treatment suppressed melanoma metastasis in mice. Our study provides a proof of principle that inhibition of hyaluronidase activity suppresses cancer cell migration, invasion and metastasis. Furthermore, we identified a natural compound delphinidin as a potential anticancer therapeutic. Thus, we have identified a path for clinical translation of the cancer resistance mechanism identified in the naked mole rat.

Aneurysms of the posterior cerebral circulation constitute a burdensome condition with high mortality and morbidity. In the modern era, there has been a trend toward favoring an endovascular approach over microsurgery for aneurysm cases. Nevertheless, this transition has yet to be mirrored in low-to-middle-income countries where endovascular therapy may not be widely available. Herein, we aim to illustrate our experience treating these challenging conditions in patients from low-income backgrounds and discuss the relevance of the clinical setting in the treatment decision.
Results of a nationally representative seroprevalence survey of chikungunya virus in Bangladesh

There is an increasing global burden from chikungunya virus (CHIKV). Bangladesh reported a major epidemic in 2017, however, it was unclear if there had been prior widespread transmission. We conducted a nationally representative seroprevalence survey in 70 randomly selected communities immediately prior to the epidemic. We found 69/2,938 (2.4%) of sampled individuals were seropositive to CHIKV. Being seropositive to dengue virus (aOR 3.13 [95% CIs: 1.86-5.27]), male sex (aOR 0.59 [95% CIs: 0.36-0.99]), and community presence of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes (aOR: 1.80, 95% CI: 1.05-3.07) were significantly associated with CHIKV seropositivity. Using a spatial prediction model, we estimated that across the country, 4.99 (95% CI: 4.89 - 5.08) million people had been previously infected. These findings highlight high population susceptibility prior to the major outbreak and that previous outbreaks must have been spatially isolated.
YTHDC2 mediated RNA mA modification contributes to PM-induced hepatic steatosis

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM) is a significant risk factor for hepatic steatosis. The N-methyladenosine (mA) is implicated in metabolic disturbances triggered by exogenous environmental factors. However, the role of mA in mediating PM-induced hepatic steatosis remains unclear. Herein, male C57BL/6J mice were subjected to PM exposure throughout the entire heating season utilizing a real-ambient PM whole-body inhalation exposure system. Concurrently, HepG2 cell models exposed to PM were developed to delve the role of mA methylation modification. Following PM exposure, significant hepatic lipid accumulation and elevated global mA level were observed both in vitro and in vivo. The downregulation of YTHDC2, an mA-binding protein, might contribute to this alteration. In vitro studies revealed that lipid-related genes CEPT1 and YWHAH might be targeted by mA modification. YTHDC2 could bind to CDS region of them and increase their stability. Exposure to PM shortened mRNA lifespan and suppressed the expression of CEPT1 and YWHAH, which were reversed to baseline or higher level upon the enforced expression of YTHDC2. Consequently, our findings indicate that PM induces elevated mA methylation modification of CEPT1 and YWHAH by downregulating YTHDC2, which in turn mediates the decrease in the mRNA stabilization and expression of these genes, ultimately resulting in hepatic steatosis.

WHO reported that neonatal hypothermia accounts for about 27% of newborn deaths worldwide. It is a serious concern in Ethiopia and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa; it poses a serious threat to global health, increasing morbidity and mortality. Hypothermic neonates are more likely to experience respiratory distress, infections and other issues that could result in longer hospital stays and delayed development. The objective of this quality improvement project was to minimise intensive medical treatments, maximise resource usage and enhance overall health outcomes for newborns at Gandhi Memorial Hospital by reducing neonatal hypothermia.

Protozoan parasites are major hazards to human health, society, and the economy, especially in equatorial regions of the globe. Parasitic diseases, including leishmaniasis, malaria, and others, contribute towards majority of morbidity and mortality. Around 1.1 million people die from these diseases annually. The lack of licensed vaccinations worsens the worldwide impact of these diseases, highlighting the importance of safe and effective medications for their prevention and treatment. However, the appearance of drug resistance in parasites continuously affects the availability of medications. The demand for novel drugs motivates global antiparasitic drug discovery research, necessitating the implementation of many innovative ways to maintain a continuous supply of promising molecules. Drug repurposing has come out as a compelling tool for drug development, offering a cost-effective and efficient alternative to standard de novo approaches. A thorough examination of drug repositioning candidates revealed that certain drugs may not benefit significantly from their original indications. Still, they may exhibit more pronounced effects in other disorders. Furthermore, certain medications can produce a synergistic effect, resulting in enhanced therapeutic effectiveness when given together. In this chapter, we outline the approaches employed in drug repurposing (sometimes referred to as drug repositioning), propose novel strategies to overcome these hurdles and fully exploit the promise of drug repurposing. We highlight a few major human protozoan diseases and a range of exemplary drugs repurposed for various protozoan infections, providing excellent outcomes for each disease.

Female cancers, which include breast and gynaecological cancers, represent a significant global health burden for women. Despite advancements in research pertinent to unearthing crucial pathological characteristics of these cancers, challenges persist in discovering potential therapeutic strategies. This is further exacerbated by economic burdens associated with de novo drug discovery and clinical intricacies such as development of drug resistance and metastasis. Drug repurposing, an innovative approach leveraging existing FDA-approved drugs for new indications, presents a promising avenue to expedite therapeutic development. Computational techniques, including virtual screening and analysis of drug-target-disease relationships, enable the identification of potential candidate drugs. Integration of diverse data types, such as omics and clinical information, enhances the precision and efficacy of drug repurposing strategies. Experimental approaches, including high-throughput screening assays, in vitro, and in vivo models, complement computational methods, facilitating the validation of repurposed drugs. This review highlights various target mining strategies based on analysis of differential gene expression, weighted gene co-expression, protein-protein interaction network, and host-pathogen interaction, among others. To unearth drug candidates, the technicalities of leveraging information from databases such as DrugBank, STITCH, LINCS, and ChEMBL, among others are discussed. Further in silico validation techniques encompassing molecular docking, pharmacophore modelling, molecular dynamic simulations, and ADMET analysis are elaborated. Overall, this review delves into the exploration of individual case studies to offer a wide perspective of the ever-evolving field of drug repurposing, emphasizing the multifaceted approaches and methodologies employed for the same to confront female cancers.

The rise of multidrug-resistant bacteria is a well-recognized threat to world health, necessitating the implementation of effective treatments. This issue has been identified as a top priority on the global agenda by the World Health Organization. Certain strains, such as Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, Candida lusitaniae, Candida auris, select cryptococcal species, and opportunistic Aspergillus or Fusarium species, have significant intrinsic resistance to numerous antifungal medicines. This inherent resistance and subsequent suboptimal clinical outcomes underscore the critical imperative for enhanced therapeutic alternatives and management protocols. The challenge of effectively treating fungal infections, compounded by the protracted timelines involved in developing novel drugs, underscores the pressing need to explore alternative therapeutic avenues. Among these, drug repurposing emerges as a particularly promising and expeditious solution, providing cost-effective solutions and safety benefits. In the fight against life-threatening resistant fungal infections, the idea of repurposing existing medications has encouraged research into both established and new compounds as a last-resort therapy. This chapter seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of contemporary antifungal drugs, as well as their key resistance mechanisms. Additionally, it seeks to provide insight into the antimicrobial properties of non-traditional drugs, thereby offering a holistic perspective on the evolving landscape of antifungal therapeutics.
