Connecting for Care: The Effectiveness of Behavioral Interventions on the Overall Well-Being of Healthcare Professionals – A Meta-Analysis

AI Summary
  • Behavioural interventions produce a moderate improvement in healthcare professionals' overall well-being (d = 0.50, 95% CI 0.36 to 0.64, p < 0.001).
  • Yoga yielded a larger, more consistent effect on well-being (d = 0.83), while mindfulness showed a moderate effect (d = 0.46).
  • High heterogeneity in mindfulness trials highlights need for standardisation and long-term research; integration into healthcare settings is recommended.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: healthcare professionals face high levels of stress and burnout, which can lead to poorer mental health, job dissatisfaction, and reduced quality of life. Behavioral interventions, such as mindfulness, yoga and group support, have been proposed to alleviate these symptoms and improve overall well-being. However, the effectiveness of these interventions varies, necessitating a comprehensive evaluation. This meta-analysis aims to assess the impact of behavioral interventions on the overall well-being of healthcare professionals.

METHOD: A systematic search of seven databases identified 21 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between 2014 and 2024, including 2668 healthcare professionals. The interventions analyzed, which included mindfulness, yoga, and group support, were all compared against no-intervention control groups.

RESULTS: The overall meta-analysis revealed a moderate positive effect of behavioral interventions on well-being (d=0.50, 95%CI: 0.36-0.64, p<0.001). A subgroup analysis showed that mindfulness interventions had a moderate effect (d=0.46), while yoga demonstrated a larger and more consistent effect (d=0.83), with no significant difference between interventions.

CONCLUSION: Behavioral interventions, particularly yoga, are effective in enhancing the overall well-being of healthcare professionals. However, high heterogeneity in mindfulness studies indicates the need for standardized intervention protocols and further research on long-term effects. These findings support integrating these interventions into healthcare settings to promote mental health and reduce burnout among professionals.
